    "Die vorliegende Arbeit ist ein Kondensat aus einem Forschungsauftrag der Bundesanstalt für Arbeit. Sie stellt eine umfassende theoretische und empirische Analyse der Qualifikationsund Verdienststrukturen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für die beiden Jahre 1974/1977 dar. Die erste Teilanalyse befaßte sich zunächst mit einer disaggregierten Auswertung der Beschäftigtenstatistik in Form von Kreuztabellierungen sowie traditionellen Darstellungen der Verdienstverteilung. Die hier vorgelegte Untersuchung zielt nun auf die Überprüfung humankapitaltheoretischer Hypothesen über die Abhängigkeit zwischen Verdiensthöhe und Bildungsinvestition. Das methodische Procedere besteht dabei vornehmlich in der Anwendung multivariater Analysemethoden (Regressionsanalyse). Es zeigt sich vor allem, daß in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland höhere Ausbildung nach wie vor gut honoriert wird. Im Zeitvergleich der hier verfügbaren Beobachtungsjahre 1974 und 1977 ist nur eine leichte Nivellierung der ausbildungsinduzierte Verdienstrelationen und damit der Ausbildungsrenditen zu verzeichnen. Darüber hinaus ergab sich, daß die vorgelegten Berechnungen die Anwendung des Humankapitalansatzes rechtfertigen dürften.     Die Struktur- und Wettbewerbspolitik (SWP) nimmt im Rahmen der langfristigen Wirtschaftspolitik eine zentrale Stellung ein. Vor dem Hintergrund des EU-Beitrittes Österreichs und der Ostöffnung gibt dieser Artikel einen Überblick zu den neueren Entwicklungen der geänderten ordnungs- und ablaufspolitischen Regelungen in Österreich. Kapitel 2 beschreibt die theoretischen Leitbilder, Zielsetzungen, und Konzeptionen der SWP sowie die darauf aufbauenden Instrumente und Institutionen. Kapitel 3 erläutert die gesetzlichen Grundlagen der SWP und stellt das Verhältnis zwischen der nationalen und supranationalen Ebene dar. Anhand der wesentlichen Institutionen, Instrumente und Maßnahmen werden die Entwicklung und die gegenwärtige Situation der SWP in Österreich und der EU analysiert.     Synthesis, effectiveness and metabolic fate in cows of the caesium complexing compound ammonium ferric hexacyanoferrate labelled with 14C

    Adding ammonium ferric hexacyanoferrate (AFCF) to cows' fodder produced after the Chernobyl nuclear accident prevented milk contamination by increasing the faecal elimination of 137Cs. Synthesis of ammonium ferric hexa[14C]-cyanoferrate (AF14CF) and its purification were performed for the study of the metabolic fate of this complex, and the evaluation of the possible release of cyanide. The stability of this colloidal product, tested by anaerobic incubation in rumen juice in vitro, showed no release of free cyanide from AF14CF, but hexacyanoferrate was identified in the rumen juice and 0·13% of the added radioactivity was converted to labelled CO2. AF14CF administered per os to two cows showed a nearly quantitative excretion of radioactivity in faeces during the first 3 d (91-95%). A very low but significant level of radioactivity appeared in plasma, blood cells, expired CO2 and was detected in organs taken 9 d after administration. Total cumulative radioactivity in urine and milk amounted to 0·19-0·47% and 0·068-0·071% respectively for the two cows. Labelled hexacyanoferrate and thiocyanate were identified in the urine and also in faeces. In spite of this relative instability of AFCF in the rumen of cows, the poor absorption of AF14CF degradation products showed that AFCF constitutes an efficient and safe food additive to prevent the absorption of radioactive caesium from ruminant feed and its secretion in mil

    Platelet-rich plasma as a potential prophylactic measure against frozen shoulder in an in vivo shoulder contracture model

    INTRODUCTION: Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a common painful and functionally-limiting disease affecting around 2% of the population. So far, therapeutic options are limited and often unsatisfactory. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used as a treatment option in other orthopedic diseases since it contains growth factors that stimulate tissue repair. So far, the effect of PRP on frozen shoulder lacks evidence. We hypothesized that PRP may be valuable in the prophylaxis and treatment of secondary frozen shoulder due to capsular remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental study of an in vivo frozen shoulder model was conducted. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats underwent surgery in which the body of the scapula was connected to the humerus with a high-strength suture. Two groups of 8 weeks survival time were allocated; a treatment group with one intraoperative injection of PRP into the glenohumeral joint (n = 10) and a control group without PRP (n = 10). The primary outcome was the structural change in the posterior synovial membrane of the posterior and inferior part of the glenohumeral joint using a semi-quantitative grading from 0 (lowest) to 3 (highest). RESULTS: The posterior synovial membrane structural changes were significantly lower in the PRP group (median = 1 [interquartile range (IQR) = 0-1]) compared to controls (median = 2 [IQR = 1-3]) (p = 0.028). There were no differences for the remaining synovial membrane changes and fibrous capsule responses between groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this in vivo shoulder contracture model, PRP injections seem to reduce the histological severity grade of some parts (i.e., posterior synovial membrane changes) of the secondary frozen shoulder without causing any side effects. It may be considered to investigate this effect further in future studies as a potential prophylaxis of secondary frozen shoulder (e.g., in operated or immobilized shoulders) or as a treatment option for patients with frozen shoulder in the early stage

    Injuries of the axial skeleton are an important field of work within orthopaedic surgery and traumatology. Most lesions following trauma may be diagnosed by means of conventional plain radiography, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. However, for some aspects SPECT/ CT can be helpful even in a trauma setting. In particular, the combination of highly sensitive but nonspecific scintigraphy with nonsensitive but highly specific computed tomography makes it particularly useful in anatomically complex regions such as the pelvis and spine. From a trauma surgeon's point of view, the four main indications for nuclear medicine imaging are the detection of (occult) fractures, and the imaging of inflammatory bone and joint diseases, chronic diseases and postoperative complications such as instability of instrumentation or implants.     The primary cilium influences interleukin-1 beta-induced NF kappa B signalling by regulating IKK activity

    AbstractThe primary cilium is an organelle acting as a master regulator of cellular signalling. We have previously shown that disruption of primary cilia assembly, through targeting intraflagellar transport, is associated with muted nitric oxide and prostaglandin responses to the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Here, we show that loss of the primary cilium disrupts specific molecular signalling events in cytosolic NFκB signalling. The induction of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) and inducible nitrous oxide synthase (iNOS) protein is abolished. Cells unable to assemble cilia exhibit unaffected activation of IκB kinase (IKK), but delayed and reduced degradation of IκB, due to diminished phosphorylation of inhibitor of kappa B (IκB) by IKK. This results in both delayed and reduced NFκB p65 nuclear translocation and nuclear transcript binding. We also demonstrate that heat shock protein 27 (hsp27), an established regulator of IKK, is localized to the ciliary axoneme and cellular levels are dramatically disrupted with loss of the primary cilium. These results suggest that the primary cilia compartment exerts influence over NFκB signalling.     Dust Production and Mass Loss in the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 362

    We investigate dust production and stellar mass loss in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 362. Due to its close proximity to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), NGC 362 was imaged with the IRAC and MIPS cameras onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE-SMC) Spitzer Legacy program. We detect several cluster members near the tip of the Red Giant Branch that exhibit infrared excesses indicative of circumstellar dust and find that dust is not present in measurable quantities in stars below the tip of the Red Giant Branch. We modeled the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the stars with the strongest IR excess and find a total cluster dust mass-loss rate of 3.0(+2.0/-1.2) x 10^-9 solar masses per year, corresponding to a gas mass-loss rate of 8.6(+5.6/-3.4) x 10^-6 solar masses per year, assuming [Fe/H] = -1.16. This mass loss is in addition to any dust-less mass loss that is certainly occurring within the cluster. The two most extreme stars, variables V2 and V16, contribute up to 45% of the total cluster dust-traced mass loss. The SEDs of the more moderate stars indicate the presence of silicate dust, as expected for low-mass, low-metallicity stars. Surprisingly, the SED shapes of the stars with the strongest mass-loss rates appear to require the presence of amorphous carbon dust, possibly in combination with silicate dust, despite their oxygen-rich nature.     Fundamental parameters, integrated RGB mass loss and dust production in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae

    Fundamental parameters and time-evolution of mass loss are investigated for post-main-sequence stars in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104). This is accomplished by fitting spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to existing optical and infrared photometry and spectroscopy, to produce a true Hertzsprung--Russell diagram. We confirm the cluster's distance as 4611 (+213, -200) pc and age as 12 +/- 1 Gyr. Horizontal branch models appear to confirm that no more RGB mass loss occurs in 47 Tuc than in the more-metal-poor omega Centauri, though difficulties arise due to inconsistencies between the models. Using our SEDs, we identify those stars which exhibit infrared excess, finding excess only among the brightest giants: dusty mass loss begins at a luminosity of ~ 1000 Lsun, becoming ubiquitous above 2000 Lsun.     Cross-Talk between TLR4 and FcγReceptorIII (CD16) Pathways

    Pathogen-pattern-recognition by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and pathogen clearance after immune complex formation via engagement with Fc receptors (FcRs) represent central mechanisms that trigger the immune and inflammatory responses. In the present study, a linkage between TLR4 and FcγR was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Most strikingly, in vitro activation of phagocytes by IgG immune complexes (IgGIC) resulted in an association of TLR4 with FcγRIII (CD16) based on co-immunoprecipitation analyses. Neutrophils and macrophages from TLR4 mutant (mut) mice were unresponsive to either lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or IgGIC in vitro, as determined by cytokine production. This phenomenon was accompanied by the inability to phosphorylate tyrosine residues within immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAMs) of the FcRγ-subunit. To transfer these findings in vivo, two different models of acute lung injury (ALI) induced by intratracheal administration of either LPS or IgGIC were employed. As expected, LPS-induced ALI was abolished in TLR4 mut and TLR4−/− mice. Unexpectedly, TLR4 mut and TLR4−/− mice were also resistant to development of ALI following IgGIC deposition in the lungs. In conclusion, our findings suggest that TLR4 and FcγRIII pathways are structurally and functionally connected at the receptor level and that TLR4 is indispensable for FcγRIII signaling via FcRγ-subunit activation
